Nice as a console there would be, there's something to be said about the ease of getting into the back of an ESV/Suburban/Yukon XL through that gap, versus having to move the 2nd-row seats themselves.
The rear is still appealingly-boxy, the tail lights are a very welcome change from the current lifeless red boxes that inhabit the space.
Running daily-ops for a business myself, I can fully understand the frustration that would come from that situation, BUT, I also know that it would force dealers off their asses and find new ways to offer real, competitive alternatives.
