Yes!

In Ontario the owner keeps the plates. That’s why I got custom plates done. No matter which car I own, I can put them on it. (obviously only car at a time).

It varies by state. In California for example, the plate is with the car for life. However, in Florida - where I live - the plate follows the owner from car to car.  This is important for people like me, who like to get specialty plates to match their cars.  As a result, I always have a few plain jane “SUNSHINE STATE”

Depends on the state. In California, plates stay with the car for life (no matter who owns it) unless 1) the owner decides to get new plates, 2) the car runs through an auction, is totaled, etc. This is why you’ll find so many California cars on their original black, blue, Sunset or even yellow plates.

I usually get the plates with the car, mostly because I like to buy cars out of state and drive them with no registration for a month or two to save some money. It’s worked out nicely so far!

As mentioned, in the US, the plates are tied to the owner. If you do not have a plate, you will receive one when you register your plate-less car. You may also transfer that plate to a new vehicle, if you trade, and if you give up a car, without replacement, you’re supposed to relinquish the plate to the DMV, although

In addition to what Mr Golfs in a Golf said, in Texas your plate is only assigned to your car for only a certain number of years (5-7 I think), after which you get a new plate and new number.

As Aaron said, it varies. In Illinois you can swap your old plate on, or if you’re not trading in they already have premade metal plates to put right on. Here in Texas when I bought my new car recently, I couldn’t swap and they had to give me a temporary paper plate while my real plates were mailed to me.

It’s more attached to the owner’s ownership(registration/insurance) of the car. If you sell the car or take it off insurance, typically the tag has to be returned and destroyed.

Here in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the tags stay with the seller or go back to the DMV when selling the car.  I decorate my garage with all my old plates.

It does depend. Here in NY you either return the plate or you have the ability to transfer it to your next car. The thing is, you can’t cancel your insurance until you do either.

Depends on the state. In MN the car retains the plate

Yea, depends how much he lost. My right arm ends just below the elbow, so I designed this

I learned that Brazil has a whole industry around armored, run of the mill cars such as Gols, Ford ka and Fiestas or even Citroen C3s.

Fuck cancer.
