The serial killer plot was problematic, but McNulty wasn't the problem.  Putting him in a position of authority was good for the character.

I gave up halfway through season five, but Jenna and Tracy seemed just as one note to me.  And by the end they were sharing that note. I think I've heard that season six is better.  Maybe I should give it another shot.

Upon further reflection, it's not even the story lines based on a character's defining trait that bother me, though there are a few notable exceptions.  Jeff's vanity based story about forgetting Kim was pretty dreadful, but his story with Blade a few episodes later was also vanity based and that felt more like

I found Jeff's reduction to being exclusively defined by his vanity worse than your examples, but yeah the cartoonization of the characters was certainly the most troubling aspect of the third season.

A friend of mine spent the entire month of March listening to Call Me Maybe.  I believe he is personally responsible for the first hundred thousand views on youtube.  As such I still have a hard time believing that it's popular.  Anytime I hear it played in stores, I wonder why this store is playing my friend's song.

I just read these books.  There is absolutely no narrative reason to split the last one in two.
