Wow, scientists have discovered a way to extract energy from internal combustion engines (a 230+ year old technology) using a Peltier device, which was created in 1834. How revolutionary!

I remember reading about this exhaust system in PopSci 20 years ago. Its just Peltier cycle semi-conductors. They didn’t pursue it then for the same reasons they wont now - the output isn’t even close to worth it for the cost.

This discussion seems quaint in a world in which most automotive mapping applications warn you of speed traps long before you are in range.

As my memory serves, “moonroof” was a lame Iacocca advertising invention when he was at Ford.

So much wrong in this article. You wrote an article about the successor W211 E55 AMG while the car in the pictures is 2002 model year, so it is W210 chasis. It does have 5.4 liter V8 but it does not have a supercharger like the W211 E55 . It makes 354hp not 469hp.

“most rental car companies don’t make you recharge”

Hertz really did get shafted by Tesla lowering the prices.

The sad thing is, I think the majority of rental car customers would get by just fine with an EV. In fact, since most rental car companies don’t make you recharge before returning the car, dropping it off is easier than ICE cars because you don’t have to worry

jesus christ man, article describes w211, photos/listing shows a w210.

The 2002 E55 did not have a supercharged V8 making 469 hp. It had a normally aspirated V8 making 379 hp. That’s a pretty big mistake for an auto enthusiast site that a simple google search would have fixed.

Negotiable. If you’re going to get a 20 year old German car, this would probably be the one to get. With proper maintenance, these cars can go double that mileage. And it looks to be very clean. I don’t think it’s NP, but not ND. $10K should take it.

Normally a 20 year old German car would be a ND from me, but at this price — for this kind of performance — I think the ask is just about worth the gamble. It’s still a close call, though, and I think for me it would come down to the vibe I got from the seller.

Nissan Altima. Just type in Big Altima Energy.

This would be CP even if it didn’t have the N14 engine, and its notorious habit of losing its timing chain tensioner, along with all the oil, while driving.

I was thinking $7,995 given the condition

Cooper S’s aren’t expensive at this point in time. Too much for what is here. The extra $4,000 seems pretty steep for the badging, reskinned seats and wheels.

Mini just has too many special editions that it’s hard to treat one as any different than the other. Considering how cheap you can get these, it’s very very hard to justify paying basically new car MSRP after 20 years.

I think we just need to go back to double-din units so that people can do what they want instead of being locked-in to whatever design the OEM came up with.

The issue is that YOU DON’T NEED A RENTAL CAR AT ALL when you have a gas car.

If I have to rent a car to make long distance drives, like road trips to visit family that live in other states, or going camping in remote areas of southern Utah, I’m not going to buy a low range EV and will keep my ICE car instead.

Only as fast as the tire technology can support.
