I think there’s another reason for the popularity of SUVs besides safety. There’s a sort of “macho-ness” to them, the size, the 4-wheel drive, the towing capability, the chrome, etc., that is akin to the truck buying ethos. In most cases a van is a better choice, but the SUV wins out.
Even as a 6 year old, I could tell that my dad’s Karman Ghia was a special car. It was a two-tone model with a red body and a black roof. I remember the simplicity of the interior and a manual gas reserve latch that you pulled when you ran out of gas.
Of course, you have a right to find this monopoly interesting. I don’t.
