Early C3 Corvettes had the best spot. Center, rear, but up and forward enough to survive relatively minor rear impacts. Of course you’re screwed in a more serious hit because the fuel tank is the crumple zone, but the filler itself isn’t the weak link (it fills directly into the top center of the tank).
