If your SSID is being broadcast, it's not private. Wireless is a shared medium. Any information sent into the air in cleartext (such as your SSID) should not be expected to remain private.

The vital difference here is that this information is being broadcast over the air. It's sort of like shouting to someone across the street, and getting mad at someone standing beside you for listening. If you don't like it, then don't shout across the street. The airwaves are for everyone.
