I do enjoy an automotive oddity here and there but goes from NP>CP>WTF in a heartbeat.

A cellar full of used takeoff parts that didn’t fix all of the issues after all?
In the event of an airbag deployment, many vehicles will shut off the fuel and turn the flashers on, unlock the doors and some even call 911 for you. If it were possible to have moved the truck to the side Im sure the driver would have done so, rather than leaving it in the middle of a freeway.
A friend of mine had one new, back when Itsabitshiti was a real player in the US market, and for the time it was the king. Fast, smooth, AWD, cutting edge Asian tech at it’s best. If it’s as good as it looks it’s a NP, time has marched on and the numbers are easily matched but you’ll have the only one on the block.
As good as cars are getting these days, a test drive is almost an anachronism, like so much of the dealer experience.
Would people pay $39K for a 1979 RX-7? Because that is the only Mazda from 1979 that any rational or irrational person would even consider.
You’re spot on with this observation. Even back when Scouts were Scouts, we Scout owners got the “nice Jeep” comments. Now it’s just a name that means something to a bunch of OF’s and I doubt that many of us will be buying one in an EV version. Mostly because we’ll have already ordered a Bronco which might be built by…
I’m saying NP but as was pointed out to me on another pontification I’d made, there’s a Market Price zone and this Westie falls into that area, I wouldn’t pay it but Westie prices have always been over the top. It’ll make somebody a good VW shaggin wagen, slow, quirky, and overrated.
The Scout was one of the early SUV’s, predating the Bronco, Blazer, Ramcharger, maybe even the original Jimney with the 2 stroke motor. And coming back means they can be as heavy as they were and nobody making a big deal of it! I owned a total of 3, my first one being an ex-miltary 4 banger with a three speed manual,…
The L322 with the BMW engine was the one to avoid. That Jag V8 has been a durable engine, easy to get 300K from them with proper care and feeding.
In a former life I had one in AK, was the AWD version and if you could have found one of those you’d be extra golden. It bashed it’s way through many an soutchcentral Alaska winter, never got stuck, my kid managed to stuff it into a snowbank and knocked the serpentine belt off and drove it 20 miles home afterwards.…
I took a test drive in a Suburu Baja and was in actual pain after 15 minutes on the road. I’m not the only one. If you fit Subie seats they are apparently excellent and if you don’t they are the rack.
We have an Equinox as a shared company car and fight over who gets stuck with it. The seats are so bad they’re almost a pisstake.
This is the insight people need, from an actual owner who participates in all aspects of ownership. I know I shouldn’t be afraid of some maintenance, since I have owned land Rovers, but I’m a bit skittish about Maseratis despite the utter fabulousness of them.
My state don’t care about nothing but the sales tax at the SOS. Cars around here actually do rot in half. No smog no physical checks.
Have you seen one with the fake wood on the side? It is full on Wagon Queen Family Truckster. Freaking hideous.
Tha’ts good to know actually. I keep thinking of upgrading to something that hasn’r lived here in the Third Coast Rust Zone. Time to check the SF CL and then a road trip!
It almost seems like too Nice a Price-for a Toyota Previa with a blower to be available for that price in that condition? Unless everything else in that area lives in the Land that Time Forgot and looks even better.
that was one of the trio, mine was a 86 GT. I put 150K on it, did do an engine swap at 180K, sold it at 215K and would see it on the streets for years afterwards. The lady I sold it to told me she was buying it for her daughter but every time I saw it around she was driving it, because it really was a good driving…
It’s those small details that sway the opinions here, and often they are justified. If the owner can’t be bothered with replacing the top, what other time bomb are they not bothering with , electing instead to sell the car on the Porsche tax crazy train. ND and anyone who is inclined to tap the 401K for this toy…
