This type of stuff bothers me - how many potential discoveries and inventions were laughed off the table by the “experts” because it didn’t fit with their world view of what something should be or look like.

Well, you’re right about that - that’s true. I guess I’m looking at it through the lens of complete world domination of two very powerful countries (not discounting Italy but I don’t think they had the clout that Germany and Japan did).
Such fortitude in the face of what had to have been nearly overwhelming terror. It truly was a different time and different generation.
