Silly question - but couldn’t we send a lander/probe to a spot in Mars orbit and just have it wait for Mars to show up? Like if Earth is on the wrong side of the sun from Mars, launch the lander to the point that Mars will be, in 9 months (6 months there, 3 months chilling out in space) and land it that way or is that…

If this is completely scrapped and doesn’t get sent to Mars could it have use on the Moon? I mean wouldn’t it better to have it go to some celestial body for science than be disassembled and scrapped?

I would say maybe if you still want to support it financially, pay for it, and archive it for a day when you want to play/experience it, and if you don’t decide you want to experience it (is it really a game you “play”?) then you might feel good knowing you supported this cause.
