I agree the show didn’t really have a firm grasp of the ethics/morals of the Federation, but that was actually something I liked about it, to an extent. It was ten years before TOS. Not exactly the “Wild West” of the Federation, which at that point would have been about 80 years old, but a lot can change in ten years.…

Well, you see, the writers are supposed to sweep those more seedy, less politically correct areas of Trek canon under the rug and pretend they don’t exist. THAT’s when it’s totally okay to go against the almighty canon.
