I think a similar type of qualifying style was done last year by the Corvettes as well. Yes, they were down a car. But you don’t win 8 times since 1999 by gunning all out for pole every time at Le Mans
Additionally it was a Mk II that won LeMans first, it took until the third attempt and an evolution. Which is not to discredit their achievement in any way, just reciting history.

Do you know how a turbo works? Anything combustible in the exhaust path would get burned up very very quickly. Now you could mechanically jam the waste gate actuator closed to produce more boost.
