Unbelievable, I have never thought about that math. My grandmother turns 90 this year, my partner’s Jewish grandmother will be turning 86, exactly how old Anne Frank would be. That past is, as you have illustrated, incredibly recent.

Story of my life. (For real though, that makes sense. You don’t want the predators to know you have a wee vulnerable critter.)
So you think work by male artists speaks to the human condition, but work by female artists is for a niche market and has no value for non-female people? Interesting.
That is fascinating! I’d only heard about research on babies born to mother’s with opiate addictions that suggested that the placenta itself contained opiates, but said research was done by a grad student in the 90s.
Beavis and Butthead exposed me to sooo many bands! I came to L7 via the Natural Born Killer’s soundtrack. Love them still!
“MMmm coppery gamy flavoured potential biohazard..”
Loved / love Portishead. My SO and I have noticed that no matter the genre, Portishead ends up playing on ALL our Pandora lists. They sure have us nailed.
Ha, no, I loved it. I feel the same way about TG!
Oh me too! People are so surprised that a vegan gets enough Fe but shit, it’s in EVERYTHING I eat basically, it’s in tofu, in oatmeal, etc.
It stands the test of time, I still love it too!
That doesn’t make you a bad feminist! It’s just a reminder of how sexism permeates our culture, from how it’s produced down to how it’s consumed!
Ugh yes, and people who would use the space for favorite books to list more bands. Barf everywhere.
Kate Bush, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, Bjork....or female helmed bands like the Cranberrys, Mazzy Star, or Garbage, off the top of my head.
I totally agree, but some folks are snobs about soundtracks.
She lost me when she hosted a retreat at a plantation. As a southerner and scholar of slavery those places are sites of atrocities, not pretty homes ideal for artist vacations.
It’s a week away, anything could happen, this weekend was originally predicted to be warmer than its turning out!
THANK YOU. I know the Tank Girl soundtrack would make my list, possibly also the soundtrack to The Crow. No shame!
I was lucky to be in Boston in some of my formative years where there were a lot of awesome feminist punk bands. There are a ton of great female-fronted or all-female punk and proto-punk bands, but I was still disappointed by the machismo I so often saw in circle pits at shows. Not to mention the elision of POC in…
It makes sense, that internalized misogyny not only shapes out tastes, it shapes who picks up a guitar in highschool, who forms a band, even who gets booked. I’ve seen intense defensive posturing from male musical journalists and bookers when female artists point out how rarely they write about and book female / POC /…
Ani Difranco would for sure be on my list, mortifying as that is now. And I LOVED Tori Amos as a teenager, but find the lyrics too inane to handle all but her cover songs as a 30-something. The soundtrack for Tank Girl would also be on my list, I assume I should find that embarrassing too.
