Have you read Ayn Rand's Anthem? It's the least cringeworthy of her works (she really should have stopped writing right then) and explains her philosophy in a way that doesn't make you want to gouge your eyes out. And it is a definite work of sci fi set in a dystopian future.

The fuel and light issues were bugging me, too. Karen was sent in because the skitters need intel on the skitter resistance. So far that plan seems to working since it looks like Ben is going to take her right to the resistance.

I haven't read up on all the specifications but a rail line across that route is certainly going to cross or be close to some fault lines. I don't know offhand if or how those issues are addressed.
