Sorry, but that is simply false. As a German I can tell you that “Ich bin ein Berliner” is perfectly fine and grammatically correct; a native speaker wouldn’t have said it differently - it’s the equivalent of “I am a New Yorker.” — “Ich bin [] Berliner” is wrong - we Germans need our indefinite artciles!
