Pretty sure you can replace the sohc with a zetec. Would probably be worth it in the long run.

I'm sure the 3 speed is a big factor. Slowness aside. It's just a terribly unrefined engine. I've never heard a car that has so much mechanical noise. I cringe when it gets to high rpms then my teeth start to rattle out, not to mention it gets about the same mileage as some V6 cars I've had..
