Seems kind of premature to pass that judgement. We have no idea how Helena's pregnancy will fit in the season's story arc but I doubt they wanted Helena to be pregnant for its own sake.

That first comic book series wasn't very good.

It's not though. The comic so far (the final book has not come out yet) has only given a bit of backstory to MK and the clones. The important parts of that backstory will probably come out in the next couple of episodes as we get to know MK better.
