Many Japanese (and Koreans to a lesser extent) wear a facemask whenever they feel sick. They’re not concerned about smog or getting sick, but rather about sharing their germs to others.
Seeing as it’s spring, it’s more likely related to the clouds of pollen in Tokyo.
The face mask IS NOT because of smog in Japan. I lived there for 17 years (Hiroshima, Okayama, Atsugi. The main reason is for illness, it’s thoughtfulness for others. Smog is a bigger issue in China. It did become/still is a fashion statement for some.

My dog (we lost her a year and a half ago) was quite a bit smaller than a Great Dane - but the truck with a cap concept worked out really well. Especially if you have a need to keep the inside of the car nice for some reason (such as driving clients around).

I recall reading an article many years ago that the refining process for diesel is simpler and therefore costs less and pollutes less during the refining process. Then the car travels 30-40% farther on one gallon, so that affects the pollution equation. And then you have to consider that diesel emissions the big thing…
