That was my point about wrenching on the 124, its DI and turbo, maintenance not exactly straight forward.

If either the Mazda or 124 have both port and direct injection technology, I would agree. A quick search seems to indicate this is not the case.

The manual transmission is a great thing.

My Focus SE Ecoboost with manual does that. The only uncomfortable thing for the kids is wrestling the seat belts around their booster seats.

Ha. The buyer actually enlisted a friend to pick it up for him. I think it was a 90mile round trip. Must be a good friend to pick up a $300 car. Will say a few hours worth of work and that $300 could resale as a $1500 car. I just didn’t want to pull the motor again, during a move, right before baby #2.

$500 buys running/driving/in-need-of-maintenance in my area. I just sold a late 90's sedan in such condition for even less than that and it only needed a water pump. New owner drove it on to his trailer. Lift that to $1000 and you have yourself a fine beater.

Re rebate windfall. Right? I was thinking more that budgeting requires a consistency in income. Poverty is not a consistent income.
