I always say something along the lines of “I’m not comfortable disclosing that, but I know you probably have a range for this position.”

I don’t get any of this. With all of the time and money that goes into hiring, if an employer finds the right person for the job, spending more time to prove you can pay someone a little less, and sour a good employee relationship from the start, seems really inefficient and stupid.

It really bugs me that all jobs don’t openly post salary ranges. There should be way more transparency about this. A friend of mine is an engineer with 20 years of experience and recently was promoted into management at her gargantuan company. Now she can see what people’s salaries are. If you’re willing to take a salary cut, I would say that and negotiate on benefits, vacation days, schedule, title, etc instead.

This is kind of insane. You must work in a field where jobs are as rare as air molecules. For most people it might take years to find a new job.

This is one of the biggest problems with the entire workforce. That somehow what my work is worth to the organization is based off my previous salary.

My current employer insistent on it, and even said “we’ll have to verify your current income before we can hire you anyway”. So I gave her my current salary and she replied back with “hey that’s $20k less than you’re asking now, that’s a big jump”....so I replied back with “now I need $30k more, take it or leave it”.…

Heck, I’ve accepted jobs & found out when the paycheck landed.

When numbers are required i’ve started putting in 000. If thats enough to get my application thrown out i have a feeling i’m good with not being hired
