Yes, I felt the same way. And I really liked how specific it was (the matter-of-fact and comforting tone really sold it).

Also “tapdancing” around a (reasonably) minor spoiler. The below highlights a point in the film which flags itself as foreshadowing. If you want to watch this film and spot the foreshadowing yourself, stop reading. But there’s no plot or setpiece spoilers.

...

Could I add, more broadly and perhaps more contentiously,

Got a question for you, person who’s seen the movie. This sounds right up my alley. Aside from the one you see in the trailer, do any animals die?

She belongs to the good people of Australia!!! We’re happy to loan her out to you, but her soul belongs to Australia. Just like we own Geoffrey Rush, Hugo Weaving, Ben Mendelsohn and Nicole Kidman. We’re happy to give you full custody of Sam Worthington though.

I had the same reaction. My sister and I have been debating the movie’s questions and signs ever since we watched it last week, and while her complaints are a bit more plentiful than mine (she also confessed to having her eyes covered a lot towards the end, meaning she missed some key details), my one preference is

I’ll be really curious to see how discussion around this one shapes as it goes wide. I caught a preview screening a couple weeks ago and agree with the sentiment of the review, but I found the last few minutes of pieces-falling-into-place to be really detrimental to the film. By the time the credits rolled, the film

Sure, but the dialogue was a little too much like a Bond villian explaining his master plan. Personally I think an entirely dialogue free scene after *that sound* would have been amazingly powerful in the same way that a long dialogue free stretch is used with the same character earlier in the film.

Tap-dancing around spoilers here: I see your point, but I thought the *way* that exposition was delivered, so comforting and with the speaker unseen, was chilling. Keeping in mind who he/she/they are talking to, I thought it was a really creepy way to handle it.

Toni Collette is a GODDAMN TREASURE....ok, an Australian goddamn treasure but nevertheless. MURIEL’S WEDDING FOR LIFE!

No modern horror movie scares me (not even It Follows or the Babadok...BLEH) but THIS one....this one might seem to be the one. I haven’t been spooked by a modern horror film since the last scene of the Blair Witch Project

I think it is?

I loved this film so very much, terrifying, moving & funny in parts. Toni Collette deserves every award going.

It was a little corny but I’m a sucker for this stuff - I really liked the “She’s coming” speech Teen Alex gave to Murder Sheriff, and it concluding with Teen Kara bursting through the wall, knocking him out (or possibly killing him by accident).

Yeah that is in keeping with Eliza always putting a lot of pressure on Alex to look out for Kara though, partly because of all the horrible stuff Kara had been through, and continued to go through, having lost her family and planet.

Ugh, she’s NEVER going to get asked to prom wearing...GLASSES!

Ok, now that I’ve read a review, you make some fair points.
But emotionally I can’t help but maintain that this was an absolutely outstanding episode with phenomenal casting, and my favourite song of 2007 to boot.

I really enjoyed the episode, but that’s okay, people can have differing opinions. One thing I’m surprised you didn’t point out though is how great the casting was of young Kara and especially young Alex. I truly thought at times, “Is this the greatest use of CGI ever!?!” Every little facial gesture was spot on.

For all its faults timeline wise and I was thinking them the entire time I actually enjoyed this episode. The previous episode of Supergirl this season didn’t really hit the mark for me however this one was an easy watch to just be entertained. Also the thematic similarities to Smallville one of my great guilty

Don’t touch Lola Don’t scratch my car—Hank

Oooh, one other thing I really liked was that they finally used the gimmick from the current run of the comic book where Kara is super advanced in math and sciences because, well, she’s from Krypton
