The more I reflect on this show the more disappointed I am. There was an abundance of unexplained events that were used for the sake of story progression that were lazily used and never explained. I think we’ve been Pumpkined. (Watch the movie Pumpkin with Christina Ricci and you’ll understand.)

I understand that David has the capability to do it but it didn’t seem like he was consciously doing it or being manipulated by someone else that caused him to do it. Syd told him what to watch out for implying that it was being caused by some external force.
