It's certainly possible. Honestly, either way, I've enjoyed the hell out of Disney era Star Wars, so it's working for me.

My wife’s mother is a mean, narcissistic drunk, and we stopped even leaving the house on Thanksgiving years ago. So much more relaxing now. Just me, her and the kid. We ate too much and watched Anna and the Apocalypse. Christmas is another story, and I don't totally look forward to it.

I doubt very little of the new trilogy was plotted out in advance. But guess what else wasn’t? Either of the other two trilogies. Lucas plotted the prequels around concept art he liked, and despite his self-mythologizing, took the classics one at a time as well.

He has some sort of degenerative disease, so I truly felt for him, but I think it was past time for him to quit the convention circuit. Which they announced they were doing, actually, after that appearance.
