I think what would help is transparency of production. If people could follow the supply chain and then choose to spend more for items in exchange for better working conditions, many would. There's a reason some people will pay extra for those eggs from pasture raised chickens and it's not because they love throwing

Just back from reading your story on Gawker. Yes, the way the U.S. overcharges in order to coerce plea deals is really just the worst. I seem to recall from a U.S. Supreme Court case that between 95 and 96% of all criminal cases are dealt with through plea bargains.
