MISTER WORLDWIDE
... But is that John C. Reilly at the table?
I do see why it could be - outright Nazism has never been anywhere near as big a thing on our shores as American slavery and discrimination was/is, but I don’t think it’s an outlandish comparison, either. Whether there was any real merit to the project I have no idea, but all in all, it did sound like more trouble…
“that has been done to death a million times” - nah, you’re thinking of British royalty dramas. We Yanks have decades of catching up to do when it comes to putting our rulers on film. :p
As others have said, no great loss. Now, how about a Rome-style, warts-and-all series about the actual Civil War?
“We as an audience are not invited to mock or lambast Janeway for her desires.” - I’m not a Voyager expert, but didn’t she once endanger the whole dang crew for her non-sentient holo-characters?
At this point? Yeah, pretty much. Whatever space science is left to do, robots can do far better than us.
This might - might - be a lot more charming if the core idea didn’t involve burning gobs of climate-baking fuel on a pointless joyride to nowhere in a tiny metal box. Sure, the growing climate crisis will inevitably cause all sorts of instability (read: violence), but hey, look at the dipshits making crayon drawings…
Star Wars Resistance: a show that definitely exists. Well, probably exists. Who’s to say, really?
And I’d argue the writing is the weakest aspect of Logan even on its own terms (did it need to be well over two hours, and was that whole anti-mutant corn subplot at all necessary?), but I take your point. :)
Eh, if Picard isn’t revealed to have become a total failure who killed his crew, thus proving his enemies right all along, and then gets an another unrelated/civilian family killed out of carelessness, I for one won’t mind. :P
“Star Trek: Picard isn’t a sequel to The Next Generation, even though multiple cast members are reprising their roles” - that is the textbook definition of a film/TV sequel. Is The Odyssey not a sequel to The Iliad, even though Odysseus reprises his role? :P
“if it’s anything like the last ride, it’ll be less about getting to the stars” - it’s okay, adults in space programs don’t get anywhere near the stars, either. :P
If by “hard pass” you mean “anguished disappointment that her flirtation with a Byronic, mass murdering crush isn’t resulting in him begging for her forgiveness and redemption through twoo wove,” then... okay.
Sure, but appearing in dreck like this sure looks like endorsement of its content. As a fan of his, I wish he were getting enough work not to appear in vile trash like this, assuming his performance is indeed purely mercenary, and reluctant.
Is it a hobbit? Because there’s a hobbit in this movie for some reason. It’s weird, and makes you wish you were watching LOTR instead. :P
Oh, cry me a river. The James Bond, Star Wars, Wizarding World, and major superhero franchises (to name just a few) tell very similar stories over and over, but when Avatar tells a familiar tale, some people can’t hush up about the lack of originality. Yeah, it was unoriginal. Does that in any way conflict with its…
“made an inordinate amount of money while also failing to become part of the larger cultural zeitgeist in a meaningful way” - seeing as Avatar has an aggressively environmental/conservationist message, as opposed to the completely anodyne “racist and/or genocidal dictators are bad, mmmkay” themes of Star Wars, Harry…
Report: even weeks after the release of TROS, io9 to continue posting at least one Star Wars story per day until... well... like I said, at least one story per day.
“Yeah, I’m good with not liking ROS, especially given who does” - did you know Hitler thought cigarettes were gross? Excuse me while I go buy and light up a pack of Camels, just to prove him wrong!
