All that tech transfer would continue to happen even if F1 were to give up tangential connection to road cars.

This is basically my argument. Why do race cars need to exist with a sheen of “road relevance”? They’re fucking race cars! They have one purpose! To go around a race track as quickly as possible! Road cars have to travel from point A to point B efficiently, quietly, and safely. They are the exact opposite goals!

The FIA had to concede a lot to keep auto manufacturers involved in the sport, and that’s why we have the current set of regulations, and why they are changing again. If all the manufacturers pull out, F1 probably will not survive, at least as we know it now.

Reducing emissions in the cars themselves isn’t the point. The point is to be pushing the technological envelope towards something that could eventually be used in road cars to reduce emissions.

The more F1 changes its regulations the more confused I get. Frankly I’m not sure why we ever needed to move beyond the 3.0L V10's. To “go green”? Really? Why does it matter how much fuel 20-30 race cars burn for two hours on a Sunday? There are 20 of them.

At some point F1 is going to have to decide if they really need to be the force that transforms our passenger vehicles.

I really wish they’d return to 100% ICE engines that don’t sound like complete ass. Sadly both seem like pipe dreams.

pretty sure they’re paid by someone for a monthly quota of anti-tesla nonsense

I think you know why...

Just the new guy jumping on the anti-Tesla Jalopwagon I guess

Why is this even an article?

Agree that Lauda is one of the best of all time, but not nearly the GOAT. Agree on his impact on F1 as a business and as a safety advocate. And was personable when i had the chance to chat with him so i liked the dude.

Weren’t you just complaining about “ad hominem” attacks?

The fact you throw Max in with Norris and Russel is still odd.

You listed a random selection of WDCs that you think might be as good or better than Lewis: Vettel, Schumacher, Senna, Prost, Stewart, Hunt, early Kimi, Keke, Lauda.

I was responding to the Toto quote about Bottas being partnered with the greatest F1 driver evar, which he isn’t.

while i’m not a hamilton fan, i respect the man. there’s no question he is in the list of best drivers of all time. Hamilton era mercedes cars had a 33% avg point gap to 2nd place. Vettel era RB cars had a 21% avg gap. Schumacher era ferraris had a 30% avg gap. Senna era Mclaren cars had a 33% avg gap to 2nd place.

This is how F1 has always been. Senna won his three WDCs in a McLaren that was overwhelmingly dominate. In 1988 McLaren took 1st or 2nd (often both) in every race but 1. In 1992 he finished 4th. 1993 was a weird year because of the FW-15C but he managed 2nd. Yet many see him as the “definite GOAT”. Lewis also won in

He also has the reputation of being boring so there’s no place for him in any broadcasting role.

I still think they should just swap him for George already. Mercedes needs a new “young” driver and George is ready for it (clearly) and is just a matter of when not if.
