At the American grandchild of a man who helped Castro overthrow the last puppet, was given a position in his government, and whose family fled Cuba only when he was was subsequently jailed for disagreeing with Castro’s communist turn, yes, let the Cubans decide if they want a McDonald’s or not.

You said it yourself, the world has been going to Cuba for decades. Do you really thing the US is the only “consumerist” culture in the world? The only one with fast food chains?

Ha! I meant for the hypothetical future, but I had no idea there had already been one. You’re right, though, they’re all-inclusive.

I agree with you! Cuba was gorgeous before and it will be again, and part of that will be preserving older architecture a la Viejo San Juan. Open interaction with foreigners and the exchange of ideas is the best thing that could happen, and I’m thrilled that people are suddenly interested in Cuban culture (PSA: cuban

This article nails it. Living in Miami everyone kind of just *knows* this, so lately it’s been hard trying to articulate the situation to people who are suddenly interested but don’t know the background. I have been forwarding her article to friends since it was published and would recommend it to anyone scrolling

“I know your roof might cave in on you and your car is held together with paper clips, but could you just keep living like that long enough for me to get my pretty pictures? Thanks.”

Just wanted to say from down here in the grays that this is probably the best Cuba-related article I’ve read on Jez (edit: The Muse! shit, you know what I mean). I’m glad we are finally reaching out, but I am also grossed out that much of that reaching out seems to be romanticizing the crumbling infrastructure as the

Yes, exactly. It was Cynthia Erivo, who WAS nominated and is one of the favorites to win.

I was just in NY (to see Hamilton) and ate at a restaurant nearby and once I saw the sign, that’s all it took to get this tune stuck in my head. I am so glad someone else remembers this commercial because I was singing it for DAYS

Hi, Tony. Your grandfather threw my grandfather in prison for disagreeing with him, so I guess we’ve got that in common.

This has been my experience as well. I think diet is much, much more important for actually losing the weight. The exercise helps more with aesthetics (putting everything back where it was supposed to be) than anything else.

Thank you. I suffered through a lot worse than I had to specifically since I insisted that nobody else know because I knew all judgment would (ridiculously) be on me. It was hell, and it wasn’t until everything finally ended, years later, and IT was out in the open that I finally felt like I could own my circumstances

I never quite understood the whole Beyonce thing until I heard Countdown. (I actually got up during the abs portion of my gym class to Shazam it)

Looking through the comments for this very reason. I have no idea who he is, but since I only know her from the constant Disney Channel loop playing in my house I’m really surprised she’s even of legal age to be married.

I think all the to-do over January Jones being pregnant revolved not so much around the fact that she was pregnant while single, but rather around the fact that the father was reportedly married to someone else (with various possibilities named from time to time).

I just finished watching it with my daughter this year, too. When April popped up my reaction was “ugh, no...already?” then had to explain to my kid that the show as she knew it was over.

I love that her “oh, I just woke up” means fully done eyemakeup and lip gloss.

Also they have several white Hispanic actors in the cast now, so I wonder if/how they draw that line?

One of the current understudies for the role is black as well.

I did (well, $450 + ticketmaster fees) and I can vouch for it being totally worth it. If you’re into that kind of thing, I mean.
