The DuckTales reboot is a thing of beauty. Everything about it is elevated, and dare i say better. The updated song is amazing. The writing on the show is top level, with some of the sharpest humour, the the point of having to stop and go “oh my god, i can’t believe they were able to get away with that”

because it wasn’t cutesie enough in a Zelda sort of way

You mean the company that’s gone whaling with microtransactions on the online portions of those great games?

“break the allure that so many J.K. Rowling defenders fight so doggedly to protect.”

Stopped reading right there. Enough of this bull shit! Being a fan of Harry Potter does not automatically make someone a J.K. Rowling defender. Yes I understand there are implications, i.e. supporting her financially helps in her quest

tl;dr for the idiots in the Board room: good single-player games sell, and sell well. Make more of ‘em.

Why is someone who’s never played a video game before writing an article on a video game website?

As someone who was not a Harry Potter fan growing up (but had seen many of the movies) I found the game pretty good. It does a great job of building the setting of Hogwarts. It also made combat very fun and rewarding.

I’m absolutely shocked that Kotaku didn’t like the TERF wizard game.

Despite growing up at exactly the right time to be a Harry Potter fan, past the first three books when I was young, I never really was. I did find the world to be somewhat interesting, but past that I was never as taken with the story itself.

“I don’t like the parts of this game that are game mechanics.”

Agreed on the Unforgivable curses. Can’t believe they did that. All the other stuff is rather nitpicky tho

Oh is a black character about to be introduced and then die in some tragic way solely to inform/advance Ellie and/or Joel’s character arcs? That’s threatening to be a pattern with this show now.

The whole universe is built on top of some rickety, bigoted nonsense. The mention of the 1612 pogrom in the *text of the game* is sufficiently damning to throw the whole fucking thing in the bin straight away, and that’s even before JK’s brutal anti-trans crusade, which gets quoted during the massive numbers of

As someone who worked as a professional translator, I agree that this is pretty much a lost cause. Things like this don’t translate well, or at all. It would be like trying to translate a crossword puzzle into another language and still expecting it to work with the original spaces provided, or even for the wordplay

But isn’t liking anything tangentially Harry Potter related the same as saying that you like Rowlings work...and since we’ve already been told it is impossible to separate the artist from their work, that you support her actions?

Not a chance. It’s literally a manga about decoding and solving puzzles. When the puzzles are language-based, as many of them are, they become difficult or even impossible to translate, let alone localize. I promise you, the writer (singular, not writers) is spending his time thinking up compelling puzzles as well as

Man...no matter where one stands on the issue, this is just depressing.

Unless rowling owns any bandai namco stock in which case the point is moot
