The more I think about it, the weirder the scene gets. How it should have gone:

Joe's emotional turn didn't feel right at all. Why would he believe his untrustworthy dad and a magical trip to a closed hospital? His father could have told him that his mother was a mental ward patient subject to Nazi psychedelic experiments trying to access another dimension and it would be as equally backed up…

The draw of this show is the world building so the characters that show us that world are far more interesting. Right now I'm actually finding Kido the most interesting as he's been the most complex character to understand.

Actually, I'd be intrigued to see the percentages of non-induced heart attacks in the American Reich. Given the emphasis on health and the screening (or, uh, purging) of genetic factors, it might be surprisingly improbable that he died of heart failure, particularly since he's a doctor himself.
