So this time, Barsanti’s level of snark is... snarky headline paraphrasing snark from noted irate person Russel Crowe, but he [Barsanti] actually agrees with, and is validating, said snark? Crikey, couldn’t we just say nice things about the 2003 film, and belay the snark entirely for once?

Correct me if I am wrong but it seems Master and Commander has always been well regarded on AV Club save for those that complained “not enough women” or “their teeth wouldn’t be so white or my favorite “it was suppose to be a 24 gun frigate but I only counted 22".

I found that to be maybe the most disgustingly misleading headline I’ve ever read on this site.

It’s like that AVClub article that tried to say that Kevin Spacey having a cameo in an Italian movie was “proof” that cancel culture wasn’t real when it would seem to me that him being reduced to such a meager role and it being a newsworthy event is in fact proof that (in that case probably rightly) people absolutely

Kemper will be fine, her career will be fine, her finances will be fine.

But then there are sites like this or social media mobs going after people, something with very valid reasons and sometimes on very flimsy pretenses

Says the website that just tried to cancel Ellie Kemper. Seriously, AV Club can talk about how Cancel Culture doesn’t exist when you get off your high horse and issue a retraction, okay?

It’s somewhat ironic that, in trying to defend cancel culture, you’ve provided an example of one of its more insidious effects on the discourse.

Pretty much this. There’s no filter. It’s just casting a wide net and if some benign dirt from 20 years ago gets scooped up for the sake of a juicy story and industry representatives on social media take notice, what’s a few casualties in service of rooting out and exposing real and current threats to acceptable

I could not agree more. I don’t even know why I come to this site anymore. Habit I suppose.

That is kind of the thing about these “cancel culture doesn’t exist” things... usually when people say that what they actually seem to mean is either “cancel culture does exist but it’s good actually” or “cancel culture should exist but it isn’t as effective as I want it to be.”  I think a lot of them are kind of

It matters to me. It ain’t the site it used to be. It’s become a social justice lifestyle blog, not an entertainment site. Bring back Nathan Rabin, in all his perverted glory.

So, yeah, ultimately CaNcEl CuLtUrE isn’t the big scary boogeyman it’s made out to be because enough people are perfectly rational and can figure out if someone did something that deserves consequences.

You write for a website (and family of websites) that just tried to paint someone as a racist because in 1999 at age 19 her parents made her go to a ball that had started allowing Black people to join an insufficient amount of time (20 years) prior to that.

QT is arguably known first and foremost for his dialog. He could set a 90 minute play in a diner (or even a single booth) and probably deliver something great. Hell - I would be surprised if someone hasn’t already done Reservoir Dogs as a community theater play.

Django Unchained and Hateful Eight are both really fucking good. As is Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which I suspect is one of those movies that’s going to become even better-received as time goes by.

idk about much better but django is definitely not a lousy movie by any stretch

Django Unchained is much better than Kill Bill.

I do wish he’d make that R-rated Star Trek -movie that he’s talked about... but the franchise probably wouldn’t allow it. Once upon a time... is a great way to go, though, if he feels like all the good ideas have been used up already.
