Culturally my family has been doing this for millennia. Every other kid takes the mom’s last name. There isn’t any confusion since no one goes by ‘Mrs. X’ and everyone keeps their family names. But I suppose since there’s a distinction between married and unmarried women it can get difficult for the kids and families.

I’m late to the game but I also have a Fred Rogers story. My mom waited tables in downtown Pittsburgh many decades ago. And Fred Rogers comes in one day (the show was filmed a mile down the road). He was polite and fine and ate his Chinese lunch special. He pays and leaves and my mom realizes he stiffed her on tip.…
