Funnily enough, it actually wouldn't, as it was during Henry II's reign that trial by combat (introduced by the Normans) went into sharp decline in England as a means of trial for the military aristocracy, instead being largely replaced by trial by a jury of knights.

This just sounds like a quickly-concocted piece of evidence for Franco's defence in a stalking trial rather than a book that a human being, even James Franco, could honestly seriously have written.
