Depends on the size of the group. In a large group some people just get to eat and don't have to host.
As somebody who hates going to people's homes, the progressive dinners can be good and bad. If the group sucks, you can just bail out after apps or dinner, but then on the other side you can't get a full meal in you and then bail out after an hour.
