This is definitely a YMMV thing but, as a child, seeing other kids win trophies and medals made me work harder to get my hands on one of those next time — and I’m talking in both athletics and academics. If everybody got one, then what was the point?

Actually, no. With parents today, kids don’t know they aren’t good at their activities and giving them trophies for participation only propagates the idea that everyone is a winner and that everyone is a special snowflake. Yes kids know, but here’s a ribbon just to throw it in your face some more.

I don’t think it’s child abuse, but I think not having participation trophies was a good way of learning that not everybody can be good at everything.
