I have worked on pre 1965 and older Corvairs and the suspension was really a change in design, a virtual redesign imho. It surely made a huge difference in handling. I agree in that it should have been used a great deal more than it was. But of course road handling was not a high priority for most at the time. None…
This is WAY too cool. What a great job Alexander Zinin did. I am very impressed. Why no production version?
Mark, cannot get the link to work. Can you relist it please?
Chevy fixed the Corvair in 65 with a complete redesign of the rear suspension. It was not just one accident, but many, including one that paralyzed the child of a GM exec that prompted the redesign. GM was aware of the defect and listed inflation pressures to compensate for the snap oversteer. Only problem was…
Mercedes is cooking up a convertible version of this car. Talk about ending the game, slam dunking the ball and cooking the goose. I wonder if Lincoln will just quietly turn out the lights and go home to mama Ford to die quietly in bed. Too bad, for their four door Lincoln Continentals OWNED this market until the 1967…
Anybody think that GM will get any more than a few mere sanctions from this? A few million dollar fine and the news cycle will move on.
CLEAN UP IN AISLE ONE! How strong are these winds at Birmingham typically? Some of the corrections are pretty violent at that, lots of turbulence it seems.
As city and county budgets get ever tighter I would NOT hold my breath awaiting this type of monitoring and predictive ice treatments and road repairs anytime soon.
Uh, could you imagine sitting in that wing seat when the panel decided to say "Bye bye?" I'll bet that person destroyed their underwear. Seriously, awesome that no body was hurt and I pray the panel did not damage on its fall to earth, nor when it contacted the ground.
The truth is clear. MOST people are not auto enthusiasts who revel in technological details and tactile sensations that only the "Lunatic fringe" like us enjoy. The overwhelming majority of people WANT and expect a vehicle to be an appliance on a par with their Kenmore washer or Frigidaire refrigerator. Truth be…
To me that is THE issue. That and Honda and Toyota's well worn reputation for durable, trouble free cars. Mazdas are also durable, but they are more known for their ZOOM ZOOM advertising. Great product, iffy marketing can lead to lousy results.
You have my vote for post of the day
Few actually get great mileage. Most bikes are geared relatively high for instant response without downshifting. Couple that with the awful aero, particularly for those bikes where you sit up straight and engines tuned more for high rpm power and you get some crappy mpg. The 1.4l inline four in the ZX14 Kawasaki…
Sell the most cars in the year, by any and all means possible.
Pretty amazing story actually. I'll bet there a LOT of stories of tech lost in the maze of corporate America, like this system.
Thank God neither was seriously hurt. The skydiver really escaped death twice here. Once when he missed the whirling prop when he passed in front of the airplane, and secondly when the bouncing plane fairly narrowly avoided becoming a crotch ornament.
Youo have rendered it un necessary
Kinda like the steel framework of buildings 1 and 2 on 9-11?
I suspect it has to do with fitting the ring gear to the crank. It is likely to be a tight fit, so they warm the gear up to more closely simulate engine temp in order to allow the ring gear to fit onto the crank.
