When I saw the title of this article I thought - “Hmm must be a cool math thing where lots of things hash to that”.... read the article “FacePalm... people are dumb....”

That’s great and all, but given the state of affairs around the world, we’d just get people arguing about whether the asteroid is real, asteroid impacts are normal and we shouldn’t worry about it, maybe the impact won’t be that bad, or how beneficial asteroid impacts have been in the past.

There used to be a time when news rooms had a science desk with people that had actual background in the sciences worked. This is pretty much all gone and what you have now are people with no science background furiously cribbing articles based on research paper summaries.

Having worked in news, I can assure you most journalist are not that savvy nor do they usually have the time to do proper research.

A lot of fake professional journals with nice sounding names exist and if you give them $300 they’ll publish your “research” without really evaluating it. You can then claim you were published in a peer-reviewed medical journal despite it being false to anyone who follows this horseshit.
