I suspect the people commenting on the article didn’t read it. The article front ends discussions of the following: 1) What makes people heavily invested in fringe sports, even when they are non celebrity players? 2) What part of competitive eating is tied into ideas of America? 3) How does sexism and xenophobia play

I've had the Rouse’s one. It’s fine. I’ve also had local cakes stuffed with crawfish and ones with boudin. If you live on the Gulf, you get invited to a lot of king cake parties this time of year. I’m always grateful when somebody brings a savory one so I don’t get a sugar hangover.

If you’ve ever driven through the rural deep South or through the rural desert areas of Utah, Arizon, Idaho , or Nevada, you know your best food bet is stopping at a gas station with a house or motel attached to it. Even if they don’t have an official restaurant, they are prepared to make you a delicious plate and

What was throwing me at first was, unlike unfried cheese, mozzarella sticks often have spices in them, which doesn’t seem to go with fruit, but then I realized that the combo of spices and sweet fruit would work like a chutney.

I would be pissed if somebody I was dating got me a cheese board from Wal-Mart (not outwardly, but I would absolutely judge them). That’s the kind of gift that says "I just tossed something into the cart while I was buying toilet paper." You could actually just take the person out for drinks and a cheese plate.

Chain restaurant gift cards are great to give to people who are travelling for the holidays. My sister-in-law always gives us one to use on the flight back home during layovers or for when we arrive home and don’t want to grocery shop.

My kid has been getting the Universal Yums box for a few years now, and it continues to be a big hit. Its just bodega snacks, but you usually get at least one weird chip, an odd candy, something made with a traditional ingredient of the region, along with a handful of other things. I also thought it was thoughtful

Yes. We are not even having turkey for Thanksgiving (we are eating duck and scallops), but I grabbed up a cheap turkey to make gumbo with for later.

Yes, I’m not sure where they are getting these numbers from. Pretty much every grocery store where is selling frozen turkeys for under fifty cents a pound and has been for weeks.

Nah, I haven’t heard these terms since the mid 80s at the latest. Obvious old man. Also what is with the moderation on these sites lately? Seriously, I was reading something on baby food or something on The Takeout, and the comments were all random trolls attacking Biden.

It’s always best to go with these classic treats!

I think it depends where you live whether you have a locally owned place nearby? If you are in the northeast or the upper midwest, sure. Anywhere else, it might not be true. My mid-sized city has exactly one independent Italian restaurant, and it is $$$. Yes, you can make better, cheaper, pasta at home, but that

Exactly this. When I worked at delis we never added a second person to a large order because it just meant all the other people in line had to wait. Also, they forgot a big  asshole move: stop touching the glass! I can see what you are pointing at without your greasy fingers smudging everything up.

I know, right? I haven't even packed my own child's suitcase since she was about seven or so because I don't want to presume what kind of pants or shirts she wants. My whole contribution is to remind her to pack a sweater in case it gets cold.

I mentioned this upthread, but I checked the Safeway website, and they have no stores in the South at all, so I suspect that this is not the most reliable data . . .

Just checked the Safeway website. None listed for Florida or Alabama.

Yeah, Im in lower Alabama. I’ve never seen a Safeway here. It’s all Publix, Rouse’s, and variation of Greers.

I am flexatarian. I eat meat 10-20% of the time, maybe. But I almost never get fake meat products because of the cost. I pretty much only buy them when I’m having a bbq or something like that so people can choose between meat and non-meat options

My school district forbids homemade snacks. Everything has to be in store packaging with ingredient labels. Usually I bring Annie Chun seaweed snacks, which are, surpringly, a big hit with the kids.

Yes! We get those cookies all the time! But almost everything from the Publix bakery is excellent.
