I was just typing in gibberish for the last two minutes on my SGS2, and I did not notice any lag. Trust me, I type a lot and if there ever was any lag it would have completely annoyed me. I have seen type lag on cheap phones like the zte blade but that is pretty much it.
If you have the international variant of any Samsung phone, you usually do not get any issues. HTC locks their bootloaders to prevent flashing, no?

The deep blacks on a Nokia screen essentially come with the Super AMOLED Plus package, no? For example, my Samsung Galaxy SII has very deep blacks, probably due to the fact that black pixels are basically not lit on LED/OLED screens.

You are mistaken, that is just their TVs. I have a Samsung Tocco from 3 years ago and it still works. I have had my Galaxy SII for 6 months and it isn't even scratched (I am not the most careful person).
CDMA. Sound like they are an MVNO using Sprint's signal. I don't think it matters if GSM is poor in your area if the network is indepenant.
Don't forget a good browser. I have used safari and it is slow as hell (on Macs and PCs).
It locates itself via GPS and sends that info to somebody probably using mobile data. GPS itself can't transmit anything.
