I always found it hilarious that the media and townspeople dragged Homer through the mud for touching a girl's butt for a second, but were seemingly OK with him blowing up a convention hall and presumably killing dozens of people.

To be fair, this episode was written by Mike Scully, who would later go on to become showrunner and ruin the show beyond repair. Perhaps Charles Don Hall was actually remarkably prescient with his proposal that Mike Scully be forced to live in the sewers.
