What scares me is that a Blue Lives Matter supporters could see a video of a naked man running away from police and perceive him “Reach for a gun.” And alternately, an anti-police violence activist could see a video of a suspect drawing a gun on a police officer and perceive him, “Just adjusting his belt.”

The question is, will they update the story with the video? Justice cannot exist without truth. Commenters have been complaining about the police department’s “Orwellian” press release but I cannot imagine anything more Orwellian than writing a journalistic article and failing to update it when video evidence emerges…

Lawyers don’t follow Orwell’s writing guides when drafting press releases because their aim is to avoid prejudicing the community against either party in a case. 

Attributing agency isn’t a virtue when writing about allegations of how an incident occurred. It’s prejudicial. The facts of this case will become public knowledge in due time.
