Hammer is the weapon I used exclusively through MH3U. I was fine and it was fun. Heavy weapons have their drawbacks and positives, like every weapon. Sword and Shield was even considered pretty bad in the late game, compared to dual swords.

His smash attacks are pretty viable for kills, and he has a really strong standard special and a pretty easy spike. I think he's one of the stronger characters in sm4sh right now.
