Whoa there, turbo. You sure gleaned a lot of (false) info from my little blurb there. All I was saying is we have 2 sentences from one side of the aisle here and to not paint this guy as a saint. I never said he should give up his dreams. I never said somebody shouldn’t chase theirs. I never said people can’t make a

You really think it’s just his dad being a dick and saying no? I’m betting no. There’s way more to this story. If his parents knew how their son is demonizing them on the Internet with a sob story, he might get cut off anyway.

Sorry, but it’s the exact opposite of short sighted. Far sighted? Sounds funny, but we’ll go with it. This kid is not being short sighted because he’s not going to the tournament. He’s thinking long term, as in: “I have one year of college left. I’m going to focus on that and then reassess what I’m doing.” Short

Yup. Pro gaming sounds like a terrible career, but that’s just me. Too many horror stories of bad ‘coaches’, missing money, broken promises, etc...

And I get the feeling that his ‘geeky hobbies’ have been a point of contention for a while, hence the whole ‘hiding this from his parents’ aspect of the story.

How does that have anything to do with this? Are you saying that because his dad won’t let him play in a tournament that he is ENTITLED to sell their home, steal their money, and relegate their twilight years to a shitty retirement facility?

My stance on this is threefold:

No, I’m down on this person because he seems like an entitled child. And that has a lot to do with this because he stated he can’t support himself, yet posts thousand dollar resort photos, multiple pairs of sneakers, and hundred dollar bottles of alcohol. So either a) his parents pay for this or b) he’s bad with

If it was just the tourney, then he way overreacted.

I totally agree with you. A good friend of mine is a senior programmer with Netflix with just a GED. It can happen. The difference is this kid chose to have his parents pay for 3 years of his schooling and, in my opinion, needs to buck up and finish. Then if he wants to try his hand at pro gaming, more power to him.

The difference is he is 1 year away from a college degree. Finish that, then try at pro gaming. As far as minor league baseball, the vast majority of those that start are fresh out of high school. If it doesn’t pan out, then they go to college. Those 37 year-olds playing Single A ball waiting for their one shot aren’t

That’s what I’ve been trying to say, but these 16 year-olds in here all want to be pro gamers.

It’s all assumption, that’s the fucking point. You assume, I assume. I’m just assuming the kid isn’t a saint and the dad isn’t a dick and you don’t like it. I’m assuming.

You are making a lot of assumption about why his father ‘flipped out’. And I never said his parents supported his hobby, I said they supported him. As I’ve stated to others, if this was the first time this subject was broached with his parents, if this kid has good grades, and if he is on solid ground with his parents

True, but as it stands now football can get your college paid for. I’m proof of that. But meatheads that say ‘I’m going pro’ and then fizzling out and working as a bouncer are no different than gamers saying ‘I’m making it big’ and having to work as a fry cook. Once eSports offer scholarships (which may be soon) it’ll

1 side of story in about 3 sentences. If he went to his dad this one time and said “I have a chance at winning money and I want to go” and his dad shot it down, then shame on him. Chances are, it’s much deeper than that.

Again, replying to the commenter not the article. People that rely on tournament winnings to make ends meet do not have careers. They have hobbies.

Replying to the poster, not the post. There are many ways to make money, and that’s awesome. But banking on winning a tournament to make ends meet is not a career.

Because he was saying that he should sue his parents for college tuition because he’s entitled to it. And he did it without making a kick of sense.

Totally agree with you there. Have a friend that makes a ton of money as a senior programmer for a huge company with nothing more than a GED.
