A bit of an aside but this week Rhode Island passed the law to make the legal age to marry 18 with no exceptions based largely on the hard work of a group called unchained at last. The Governor must sign it still but it will become the 5th state, only the 5th, to ban child marriage.

My son is 14. There’s is no way in the world he’s ready to make the kind of decisions that poor girl was put under. Apologists can go on about agency all they want; that child (yes...child) was 14! That guy is a pedophile despite whatever kind of loopholes Wyoming law may have had at the time.

Addiction is a thing. Many women are addicted when they get pregnant. The answer is not to throw these women in prison, but to help them with their addiction so they can have a healthy pregnancy. It sounds like this was a wanted pregnancy, too.

A $5 million bail? That is the definition of excessive. It’s not like she was at risk of “murdering” anybody else. This woman should have been offered help and treatment for bother her stillbirth and the drug use.
