I think part of it might be that Captain America's meant to be what America should aspire to be like, rather than a reflection of what America is.

Sorry, I didn't intend to pile on. I just wanted to explain that you don't need to be annoyed about him. If he wasn't as progressive as he is you'd be hearing it from comic fans about how they screwed up the character, he isn't just some WWII GI that was time warped to the future. He's goddamned Captain fucking

I'm not arguing that most Americans were not racist (certainly by our standards today) and that many, if not most, Americans are not still pretty racist, but it's no more accurate to have characters in a period film spewing racist comments than to have none of them do so. There were people who were openly racist,

The point of the Capt. American comics was to encourage in children that those ideals were real and could be lived.

The character was created in 1941 and was written from the beginning to be an extreme progressive. Steve Rodgers the character only became Captain America because he was so different than the average person, I don't understand why it bothers you so much. He was created at that exact time to be a symbol of potential

One note - Captain America was from Brooklyn. So was my WWII vet Grandfather - a lily-white MP in the first integrated bootcamps down South. And while I wouldn't call him a major progressive, he didn't tolerate any racist bullshit from southern crackers, against anyone.

Nope. That's not how Capt. America was written at the time he was conceived and never did anything like that in the comic books of the time or later. The whole point of the character was to represent the very best and truest ideas of equality and liberty. Go look it up and be enlightened.

Captain America wasn't from the South though. He was an art student in Depression-era NYC. Someone actually gave a really detailed historical snapshot to argue why that character wouldn't be someone who acted like that: http://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2013/10/steven…

As a girl who went to Texas Girls State this year, and will actually be attending Girls Nation in just a few weeks, I can say I do not have words for how mad this has made me. Girls state is such an amazing experience, and to hear how different Boys state is has made many of us very upset. Here in Texas, Boys State

With everything you said, plus it being Indiana, all I can think of is the Pawnee Goddesses:

This just confirms my anecdata from high school that teenagers are incredibly misogynistic. I wish they all had to take a comprehensive sex ed class that covered shit like "Having sex does not make you a stud and her a slut", "Two people are responsible for a pregnancy", and "Consent 101: everyone involved has to be

I'm still convinced that she's actually going out with French Stewart from "Third Rock from the Sun". Why call your son French?

If I could sent internet flowers and booze, you would be inundated today.

I've always kind of had a crush on French Stewart...that's the first time I've ever admitted that. I don't know why I like him?

I thought the same thing.

I read French Montana and my mind immediately went to this guy:

Should we start a change.org petition?

same

OMG, Khloe with Harry from Third Rock would be amazing!

I'm sorry. French Montana? Is she dating an Arby's sandwich? Because I know that's not a human being's name
