I still think the Xperia Play is pretty good overall. The one thing that continued to kick me in the teeth for the 2 years I was dependent on it was that it only had 400 MB of onboard storage.

I'm glad you agree with me. It's an option. More options are usually better, and in this case, I think it applies. I agree that a lot of videos shot in portrait mode shouldn't be, but the option shouldn't go away because some people don't know how to frame their subject.

I'd prefer to have maximum possible pixels recording the subject I want to record. Consider that you want to record, say, the Statue of Liberty as you travel on a boat around…

Maybe you're taking a video of a person, or the Statue of Liberty or some other tall and skinny object, and you don't care about the backdrop at all. Frame the subject.
