It's used in the mudding community pretty extensively. Also for people who do off-road winter driving. On tarmac you really do want skinnier tires to bite down to the pavement, but off-road the only way you will get through snow is really wide, really tall tires. Or tracks.

Agreed, automobiles are an expression of our freedom. Thank goodness we can still register classics/antiques the way we want 'em.

The 1970s seatbelt interlock. Seatbelts had to be fastened to start the car. Led to an epidemic of people sitting on top of always-buckled seatbelts and no end of annoying electrical problems. Regulators came to their senses pretty quickly on that one.

The European pedestrian impact regulations have really played havoc on the styling of many new cars, including making pop up headlights impossible.
