Illinois Fighting Illini is still the name used for Illinois athletics. I get your point, but still having the “Fighting” in there makes it less awkward, at least.

Illinois has never dropped “Fighting” from their name. The only thing that’s changed is that they no longer use the Chief Illiniwek logo or costume. The name stayed because it predated the native connotation, as it was originally used in honor of Illinois’ World War I veterans.
