For 3 years I had the BMW version of these idiotic return-to-center joystick style shifters. I don’t get why car companies make them. My car had 3 fail safe mechanisms not present in the even stupider FCA version:

Actually tried talking my GF a few years ago (wife now) to buy an E39M5. She saw the B7 S4 and went that route instead. Never fully forgave her for that. LOL. We got rid of that car and got her into a BMW 550 - we now need (needed it then too I guess) the AWD.

Lovely E39 M5. I have an E36 M3/4/5 and think that the E3X era M cars are the best looking cars out there.

I think the e39 and e46 are the sweet spot for BMW. Simpler, more reliable, and better-looking (IMO) than newer ones, but more powerful, better-optioned, and much less dated than older ones. Brand new cars don’t have many features I deem worthwhile that either of these cars don’t have.
