On the contrary, I believe autonomous cars will reduce congestion, shorten commutes, and raise average speeds for everyone. Consider the “elastic effect” at stoplights. Now imagine this: the light turns green, and EVERY car immediately starts moving in uniform cohesion. Multiply this by dozens of traffic signals

The few unrelated causalities would just be the spoils of war.

No one’s saying that we can have fully-autonomous vehicles now. It will happen in the future, and anyone that says otherwise is simply stupid and unimaginative.

How is this a hipster thing? Seriously? You're saying that one particular group of people will bitch and moan while everyone else champions it?

A lot boils down to personal responsibility, in my mind.

SO dangerous! I bet you anything that poor guy spilled his soda. So sad.

It’s not just a matter of people feeling that it’s a right. In most parts of the US, it’s a necessity. Most of our cities are not built for people who don’t have cars. If you want to make getting a license harder (which I’m in favor of) you also need to improve other aspects of society like improving mass transit and

how tf are they holding the soda with that grip?

Stringent re-testing of old drivers will take driving away from all but the most competent of them as well.

Problem: Janice from accounting just don’t give a fuck. As the driver is further removed from the equation, it’ll only get worse overall. I’m curious to see how self-driving cars handle wear-and-tear items. Bald tires will compromise any autonomous system I’ve heard about on the horizon..

They can do that already.

I have a bit more faith in the UI designers than you, it seems.

I remember watching some video from China where a baby gets run over by a car, and they just keep on going as though they ran over a speed bump. The idea that humans are such amazing operators of vehicles is such a fucking fantasy.

The town and city planning in the US really does work heavily against not needing a car once you get outside major cities. People like to spread out and have plenty of space in the US, and as someone that spent time in both the US and Europe growing up I really do see the appeal. But when you are a grown up you really

I expect the cost for fully autonomous transportation will bring a lot of those luddites around. Sharing and the operating efficiencies of fleet-owned-and-designed vehicles will bring total user cost down to shockingly cheap levels.

Who the fuck would let their kid lay in the middle of the fucking road, that has to be one of the most idiotic comments I have ever read, heard, or even said.....and that’s a lot!

I’m curious to see what level of safety people demand of autonomous vehicles.

Most humans would be too busy looking at their phone to notice there even being a lump in the road.

Very interesting. I’ve read a few of Gladwell’s books, he seems like a cool dude. It’s ironic that many of the same people that refuse to really understand how to properly operate a car are the ones most afraid of a fully autonomous infrastructure.
