I'm not sure about "worst ever" but I agree there are some serious issues. When I'm building actual furniture (which I do not do much of) I tend to use hardwood. I really like working with Maple because it is a local material here in Maine, but I often end up using Red Maple because it's easier to find good boards.

I think there are other serious issues with it for cabinetry and furniture. It's very heavy and not very strong (in terms of resisting sheer force) as I recall.

MDF can be good as well if you're looking for something that is very consistent in shape, very flat, and very hard. I've used it for ping-pong tables, and when you apply a green chalk-board paint to it, the surface is damn near perfect.
